Anybody who has seen Fugazi live could have walked away wondering what Guy Picciotto ate before the show that gave his performance such maniacal energy. He moves to the music like a contortionist on speed and sings with the passion of just-orphaned child. Have you seen Fugazi's film "Instrument"? In a clip from one of their early shows in a high school gym Picciotto jumps for the basketball rim and sings while hanging like a bat, his legs through the hoop.
Rites of Spring was Guy Picciotto's band before he and Brendan Canty joined Fugazi. With a frontman like Picciotto, it's no surprise they were a ground-breaking high energy band that set off a movement all its own. Today it is known as "emo", but it seems the energy and innovation is no longer part of the style.
The Rites of Spring stand out as one of those "never surpassed" bands that deserves to be on the shelves of anybody who listens to punk or post punk or "emo-core".
