Animal Collective Live Show Wednesday March 8 2006
Hollywood's Vanguard was sold out for the Animal Collective show last night. The four mammals set up their own gear then launched into a mostly-vocal tune that involved a lot of yelping and screaming. The next tune was more rhythmic, but also involved a lot of yelping and screaming. Well, most of the show was a long series of yelping and screaming. At least I finally understand why they call themselves "animals": they spend most of their time jumping up and down screeching like a pack of over-caffeinated chimps. Amazingly the crowd seemed to expect the zoo-gone-wild act and were actually enjoying it. Personally I wondered how such off-the-wall music could draw so many people. Sure, some of their acts are entertaining to watch and hear (like the all-out tribal-screams song) but there were too many slow and aimless passages to keep my attention (much like their albums for that matter). I recommend going to the show just for the experience, but seek out a comfie couch to sit out the drawn-out parts.
